In my bookcase...

'The Essex Serpent' by Sarah Perry

I cannot begin to tell you how many times I picked this up book up to buy only to put it back a moment later. It was one of those books that I knew I wanted to read but just never quite made it a priority.

I'd read the reviews - the jacket and opening page are covered in them - from the various newspapers and critics and knew this was a book that needed to be read during the dead of winter. It's a book that you read slowly, relishing the language and luxuriating in the rich dialogue as the night draws in.

I won't say too much about the plot because I'm not that far in myself but I can say that already I am completely hooked. The characters are expertly drawn and the settings are described with a haunting accuracy.
